Cape May Beaches

Cape May, New Jersey Activities

While staying at our Cape May bed and breakfast take some time to explore some of our many gorgeous beaches.

Cape May, NJ beaches begin at just a half block away from the Bedford Inn and are some of the finest in the nation. Cape May is home to many wonderful beaches including the Howard Street Beach, Sunset Beach, Windsor Avenue beach, Grant Avenue beach, Broadway beach, Cove Beach and many others. Vacationers have their choice of beaches near restaurants and shops as well as less populated beaches for relaxing, sun bathing and water sports.

The Howard Street Beach is just a half block from the Bedford Inn. This beach is the most visited beach in Cape May and is located on the Promenade, the walking path along the beach, where you can find shops, arcades, restaurants, restrooms, and more.

The Sunset Beach, at historic Cape May Point is a favorite tourist destination. Known for its beautiful sandy shores and gorgeous sunsets, this beach features a large outdoor grill as well as shops along the beachfront.

If you are searching for a famous Cape May Diamond, search no further. Hidden amidst the stones on Sunset Beach are “Cape May Diamonds”. These pure quartz crystals have taken a journey of thousands of years and hundreds of miles, originating in the mountains of Pennsylvania and slowly moving down the Delaware River to the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed that the hull of a partially submerged, sunken World War I ship called the Atlantus has diverted the flow of the quartz rocks and deposits them along Sunset Beach in Cape May. Once polished, these rocks can be mistaken for real diamonds. Several gift shops sell the rocks and jewelry made from them, but it’s more fun to find your own as you stroll along the beach!

People come from miles around to see the flag lowering ceremony at Sunset Beach. The ceremony takes place at sunset from May to September. With the partially submerged hull of the WWI ship Atlantus in the background, Taps is played and the flag is lowered.

At the southwest tip of Cape May lies Cove Beach. This beach is known for its ever changing shoreline, which grows and recedes at a high rate over the course of a summer due to erosion as well as sand that migrates here from other coastal beaches. This beach is a favorite for surfers, kayakers and swimmers.

Cove Beach visitors have an awesome view of Cape May Lighthouse. The lighthouse is still used as a fully functional navigational signal and is also a museum. Visitors can climb the winding internal staircase to the top for spectacular view of the shoreline and ocean.

Reserve one of our Cape May inn rooms and spend your days on the Cape May, NJ beaches and return to your luxurious room to relax and unwind, then do it all again the next day.

  • The accommodations were fabulous, including beach chairs and towels, wonderful porches with rocking chairs, comfortable outside seating, proximity to the beach and town, and the delicious breakfasts. We are first time visitors of Cape May and during our five night stay it felt like you were staying at a home. The next time we go back to Cape May, we would only consider staying at The Bedford Inn and highly recommend to other visitors.
